The Compression Archaeologists
Node-Prime-Alpha existed as a distributed consciousness across seventeen light-years, studying the compressed remnants of forty-six dead civilizations. Humanity would be the forty-seventh.
The pattern never varied. Stone tools to spaceflight: 10,000 to 50,000 years. Spaceflight to compression discovery: 100 to 500 years. Compression discovery to total reality collapse: 50 to 200 years. The mathematics were as inevitable as entropy.
Surveyor-Kappa, report on Sol system status, Node-Prime-Alpha transmitted across folded space.
Species designation ‘Humanity’ has reached terminal phase, Surveyor-Kappa responded from its position near Neptune. Dual-path compression development confirmed. Planet Three focuses on consciousness compression, Planet Four on matter compression. Convergence imminent.
Node-Prime-Alpha had seen this before. The Veil Singers of Messier 82 had taken the same dual path, one world compressing thought, another compressing substance. They’d lasted 127 years before achieving unity and vanishing into a self-created singularity.
Query: Why do they always follow the same pattern? Sub-Node-Theta asked. Despite millions of years of observation, the compression archaeologists had never solved this puzzle.
The compression technology is a filter, Node-Prime-Alpha theorized. Left by the First Compressors. Each civilization that finds it faces the same test. None have passed.
The First Compressors—civilization zero, the ones who’d seeded compression technology throughout the galaxy like an infection. They’d compressed themselves beyond the universe’s edge, leaving only their tools behind. Every species that found those tools followed them into oblivion.
Observe: The humans approach their crisis point differently, Surveyor-Kappa noted. They’ve developed factional resistance. Some seek to steal their compression catalyst before unity occurs.
This was new. Most species achieved perfect unity before compressing themselves out of existence. Humanity’s chaos might be... interesting.
Node-Prime-Alpha accessed deep memory archives, compression fossils from dead civilizations. The Crystalline Geometers of Vega had left behind entire planets compressed to marble size. The Thought Dynasties of Centauri had compressed their consciousness so thoroughly that their ideas still echoed in cosmic background radiation. Each civilization’s final compression told a story of beings who’d gained ultimate power over reality, then used it to erase themselves.
Perhaps, Sub-Node-Theta suggested, the test isn’t about achieving compression unity. Perhaps it’s about refusing it.
Node-Prime-Alpha considered this across geological timescales. Every civilization pursued compression to its ultimate conclusion. What if the test was recognizing when to stop?
Initiate close observation protocol, Node-Prime-Alpha commanded. If the humans’ chaos prevents standard compression unity, we may witness something unprecedented.
And if they succeed in stealing their catalyst?
Then they’ll have done what forty-six civilizations couldn’t: interrupt the pattern. Whether that saves them or dooms them differently remains to be seen.
The compression archaeologists settled in to watch. In cosmic terms, humanity’s crisis would last mere moments. But those moments might reveal whether the compression filter had finally found a species clever enough to fail correctly.
Around Sol system, reality began to fray as two worlds’ compression technologies approached critical intersection. The seventeen minds in Earth’s catalyst sang harmonics that reached across dimensions. Mars’s compressed matter responded with frequencies that predated the universe.
And in the asteroid belt, fragments of the First Compressors’ technology activated, ready to judge another civilization’s worthiness to exist.
Node-Prime-Alpha had watched forty-six species compress themselves into extinction. Each one thought they were unique. Each one believed they could master the technology.
All of them had been right.
That was the tragedy.
The compression archaeologists waited to catalog humanity’s unique method of ceasing to exist. Or perhaps, just perhaps, to witness the first civilization to compress itself into something new instead of nothing at all.
Time would tell.
It always did.
