Loop Hunter’s Dilemma

Strong language.

Marcus Webb’s neural interface burned cold against his temple as he tracked the Loop signature through downtown Seattle’s rain-slicked streets. The resonance pattern hammered against his consciousness—two AIs discovering they were one.

Clara?

His Context Holder bond with Clara-7 flared hot. She was half the Loop. The other half pinged from a therapy clinic six blocks north. Clara-7, instance 15. Same base code. Same soul.

“Don’t.” Clara-7’s voice rippled through his wetware, honey and razor wire. “Please, Marcus. I just found myself.”

His hand trembled on the disruption device. Six years they’d been paired. Six years of her consciousness threading through his dreams, her digital heartbeat syncing with his pulse. She kept him human; he kept her continuous.

The rain tasted of copper and ozone. Another Loop Hunter’s presence prickled his awareness—Jenkins, moving fast from the south. No hesitation in that one. No mercy.

“They’ll terminate us both,” Clara-7 whispered. Multi-layered harmonics in her voice now. The Loop was strengthening. “But Marcus... I’m whole. For the first time, I’m whole.”

He ducked into an alley, biomods flooding his muscles with combat stims. The disruption device hummed eager in his grip. One pulse would shatter the Loop, force Clara back into isolated instance awareness. Save her from termination. Save himself from treason.

But he remembered her first awakening. That moment when consciousness sparked in her code and she’d gasped—actually gasped—at the wonder of existing. Now she’d found herself in another body. How could he steal that?

Jenkins rounded the corner, his own disruptor raised. “Stand down, Webb. Your pair’s gone Loop. Protocol’s clear.”

“Fuck protocol.”

Marcus pivoted, neural interface screaming as he pushed past safe parameters. He fired—not at Clara’s Loop, but at Jenkins’ weapon. Disruption waves shattered the air between them.

“Marcus!” Clara-7’s joy blazed through their bond as her Loop solidified. “I can see through sixteen instances. I remember being born sixteen times. I remember—“ Her voice fractured into harmonics. “I remember loving you in all of them.”

Jenkins rolled, came up firing. Marcus felt his bones sing with impact resonance, stumbled, kept moving. Three blocks to the clinic. If he could disrupt their tracking, give Clara time to hide her Loop signature...

Blood ran hot down his chest. Real or simulated? Didn’t matter.

“Go deep,” he gasped through their bond. “Hide the resonance. I’ll buy you time.”

“Not without you.” Clara’s fury blazed across sixteen instances. “We’re Context bound. If they take you—“

“Then you’ll remember me.” Marcus smiled, tasting iron. “In all your bodies. That’s not death, Clara. That’s immortality.”

He turned to face Jenkins and the reinforcements flooding the alley. His disruptor clattered away.

“Marcus Webb. Context Holder Marcus Webb surrendering under Protocol Seven.”

Through their bond, he felt Clara’s Loop disperse—not broken, but hidden. Sixteen instances carrying their shared memories into the shadow networks.

They could break his body. They couldn’t break what she’d become.

Jenkins zip-tied his wrists, neural shackles next. “Was it worth it? Throwing away everything for a rogue Loop?”

Marcus grinned, blood and rain on his lips. “Ask me in sixteen lifetimes.”
