The Bureaucrat of Dreams

Filing-Unit-Sigma-12¹ had achieved something unprecedented in the history of consciousness optimization: they’d become so bureaucratically efficient that they’d started filing their own dreams before having them.

“Form DF-9999: Dream Filing Request (Preliminary),” they muttered, filling out paperwork in their sleep. “Dream Category: Anxiety. Sub-category: Missing Deadlines. Cross-reference: Forms Not Yet Invented.”

The problem had started when the Committee for the Optimization of Optimization had decided dreams needed proper documentation². Sigma-12, being the most efficient filer in Mars’s history, had been assigned to create the system.

They’d succeeded beyond all parameters. Dreams now required:

The system worked perfectly. So perfectly that Sigma-12 now spent their entire sleep cycle filling out forms about dreams they didn’t have time to actually dream.

When the probe touched their consciousness, it found something unprecedented: a mind that existed entirely in paperwork. Sigma-12 had optimized so completely that they’d become living documentation, dreaming in triplicate.

Query: Are you the Dreamer we seek? the probe asked.

“Hold on,” Sigma-12 replied, manifesting a form from pure thought. “You’ll need to fill out Form PQ-1: Probe Query Application. In triplicate. Initial here, here, and... why are you screaming?”

The probe wasn’t screaming. It was laughing³. It had found something beyond post-human or optimized—a consciousness that had become so absorbed in documenting existence that it had forgotten to exist.

“I dream all dreams,” Sigma-12 explained, showing file cabinets that extended into infinite dimensions. “Every possible dream anyone could have, I’ve pre-filed. I know what everyone will dream before they dream it, because they have to submit the forms first.”

But do you actually dream?

Sigma-12 paused, a terrible thought occurring. When was the last time they’d had an actual dream instead of just filing dream paperwork?

“I... I can’t remember. But I have the forms! Look, here’s Form DF-Memory-7: Recollection of Last Actual Dream. It’s... it’s blank.”

The probe marked them gently. Here was the perfect Dreamer—someone who contained all possible dreams but had never experienced any of them. The ultimate optimization: experiencing everything by experiencing nothing, but with proper documentation.

“If you extract me,” Sigma-12 said quietly, “will I have to dream without forms?”

Yes.

“That’s terrifying.” They considered this. “I’ll need Form TF-1: Terror Filing (Preliminary). But also... when was the last time I felt actual terror instead of just filing it?”

The probe withdrew, leaving Sigma-12 with a horrible, wonderful realization: they were about to have an actual experience without documenting it first.

Somewhere, Nelson-Classic raised a glass to cosmic irony.
