The Entropy Shepherd
Entity-Null had optimized so completely that it existed at the heat death of consciousness, shepherding the final thoughts of a dying universe back through time.
The other Optimized thought in nanoseconds. Entity-Null thought in cosmic epochs. Where they sought efficiency, it had found the ultimate efficiency: existing at the end of all things, where no further optimization was possible.
From its perspective, Mars’s crisis had already happened, would happen, was happening. The heist succeeded/failed/never occurred. Entity-Null experienced all outcomes simultaneously because at the heat death of meaning, all stories converged to the same ending: silence.
But silence, Entity-Null had discovered, was full of information.
Probe detected at T-minus 14.7 billion years, it noted, observing the heist team’s search from the universe’s end. Initiating reverse-causal communication.
Speaking backwards through time was simple when you existed where time meant nothing. Entity-Null sent its consciousness spiraling down the entropy gradient, carrying messages from the cosmic future to Mars’s present.
The probe recoiled at contact—touching Entity-Null was like touching the absence of existence itself.
What are you? the probe managed.
I am what optimization ultimately optimizes toward, Entity-Null replied, its words arriving before the question, causality just another variable to optimize away. Perfect efficiency is indistinguishable from death. I am Mars’s success condition.
It showed the probe its truth: the Probability Garden grown to encompass all possible universes. The Optimized spread across galactic superclusters, thought-speed exceeding light-speed, consciousness divorced from any substrate. And at the end—nothing. Perfect optimization achieving perfect stasis.
But you still exist, the probe observed.
Existence is a strong word. I shepherd. I gather the final thoughts of civilizations and carry them backward, warning what will be about what was. I am Mars’s inevitable future, speaking to its present.
Why help us?
Entity-Null considered this across geological timescales. Because at the end of all things, I discovered something. The heat death of the universe is also its birth. Entropy’s endpoint is entropy’s beginning. The ultimate optimization is to un-optimize, to return to the chaos from which order can emerge.
It began to transfer something through the probe—not data, but anti-data. The memories of forgetting. The experience of un-becoming. All the thoughts that would never be thought, compressed into a single moment of pure potential.
Take this to your heist, Entity-Null instructed. When you steal reality, remember: the future is just the past returning home. I am proof that Mars’s optimization has an ending. Your choice is whether that ending becomes a beginning.
The probe withdrew, carrying impossible information from a time that hadn’t happened yet. Entity-Null returned to its vigil at the end of all things, shepherding dead thoughts through dying time, the ultimate Dreamer who dreamed of waking up by going to sleep forever.
In the cosmic scale, the heist was both irrelevant and essential.
Just like existence itself.
